Soccer 'fobbed off'

Thursday, October 04, 2007

Young children wanting to play soccer in Mt Barker are being turned away because the town's club lacks the facilities to take on extra players.

The Mt Barker United Soccer Club has been forced to cap the number of players it can take each season because it has only one training pitch it can use after dark to share between 16 teams.
The teams are forced to share the space at Anembo Park while Dunn Oval in Mt Barker - fully equipped with lights and big enough to host up to four teams for training - lies dormant.

Club secretary Joan King said last year's World Cup prompted a surge of local interest in the sport, with more children than ever before wanting to play. But inadequate facilities have forced it to turn away many new players, some of whom opted to join metropolitan clubs.
"I have to say 'I'm sorry but the teams are full'," Mrs King said.
"Last year some teams had up to five subs sitting on the bench at each game.

Anembo Park plans go national

Friday, July 13, 2007

The Mt Barker Council will seek expressions of interest from developers prepared to construct new sporting facilities at Anembo Park. It is the latest step in the proposed upgrading of the Littlehampton venue, with plans for a 16-court tennis complex, floodlit synthetic and turf sports areas for hockey and soccer, a cycle park and open space.

The council will advertise locally and nationally for expressions of interest to develop the facilities, particularly a central building that could include bar, catering and restaurant facilities, a gymnasium, office and meeting space and storeroom areas.
It could also include the development of onsite businesses such as clinics for physiotherapists, chiropractors or general wellness. Submissions received will be assessed by a panel including council  and independent members before any action on the project is  recommended to the council.

Sports plan

Friday, March 02, 2007

Littlehampton's Anembo Park will become a state-of-the-art regional sporting hub if a major expansion of facilities on the site goes ahead. The area is already home to sports including soccer, hockey, tennis, softball and model car racing, but a new option being considered by the Mt Barker Council shows existing facilities could be widely expanded.
Under the plan, which is yet to be finalised, Anembo Park would boast 14 tennis courts, along with two extra show tennis courts, sunken courts that would be covered to shelter against rain.
Also on the plans are an artificial turf hockey pitch, a State league standard soccer pitch, four smaller pitches, separate junior and senior BMX tracks and a dirt jump track.
New amenities, including a two-storey building featuring clubrooms, storage, kitchen and dining facilities, possibly catering for functions of up to 250 guests, are also proposed along with community facilities such as a playground and barbecue area.
